Overview
Main identification features
  • slender, compressed
  • red/brown mottled
  • soft d: large dark blotch
  • 0-2 spines under eye
  • body: no skin flaps
Dorsal rays XII,10; anal rays III,5; pectoral rays 21, the lower 14 unbranched and thickened; body relatively slender, depth 30-33% of standard length; snout relatively short, 7-11% of standard length; pit behind eye weakly developed, only a slight depression; no pit below eye; ridge under eye bearing 0-2 small spines; cirrus over eye disappears in adults; skin flaps absent on body; very similar to S. russula, but is slightly wider between the eyes (5-6% versus about 4% of standard length).

Generally mottled red and brown with irregular dark bars on sides, ventral parts whitish; differs from S. russula in having a large rounded dark spot on the soft dorsal fin, rather than 2-3 irregular rows of small spots.

Size: to about 18 cm.

Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms.

Depth: 1-91 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to southern Mexico.
