Head very bony, with numerous spines; lateral line with tubes on scales; pectoral fin 20 rays, all unbranched; head and body compressed; large, deep head, nape flat; eye relatively large (24-29% of head length); between eyes; dorsal fin XII, 9 (rarely 8), without elongated 2nd or 3rd spines; pectoral 17-19 rays; anal III,5, second spine moderately long; 15-22 spines on first gill arch; 23-29 scales with lateral line pores.

Head and body bright red; with grey-green blotches on back; underside of head and inside mouth bright white.

Size: 24 cm.

Habitat: rubble bottoms.

Depth: 48-351m.

Southern Baja to the central Gulf of California to northern Peru.
