California Fungi—Pholiota squarrosa Pholiota squarrosa
(Photo: © Michael Wood)

Pholiota squarrosa (Vahl) P. Kumm.
Führ. Pilzk.: 83. 1871.

Common Name: none

  • Habitat

In dense cespitose clusters on aspen, sometimes other hardwoods and conifers; fruiting from late summer through fall in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges.

  • Edibility

    Unknown.

  • Comments

Pholiota squarrosa can be recognized by tawny, erect to recurved scales covering the tan to straw-colored cap and stipe. The dry cap, greenish-tinged gills, and garlic odor (in some populations) help distinguish it from Pholiota squarrosoides , which has a viscid cap surface under the scales, white young gills, and an indistinct odor
