Etymology: Percina: Latin, diminutive of perch = perch (Ref. 45335 ) ;   carbonaria: Percina =a small perch; carbonaria =of or relating to charcoal, perhaps in reference to black coloration on parts of the body and/or overall dusky coloration of the species (Ref. 79012 ) .  More on authors: Baird & Girard .
