Etymology: Nannobrachium: Latin, nannus = small + Latin, brachium = the upper arm from the shoulder to the elbow; 1731 (Ref. 45335 ) ;   wisneri: Named in honor of Robert L. Wisner, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, in recognition of his contributions to the systematics of myctophids and other oceanic fishes (Ref. 36121 ) .

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-15; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 16 - 19; Vertebrae : 36 - 38. 13-16 AO photophores; 8-10 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 34-37 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121 ). Pectoral fins completely lacking in subadult and adult stages; vestigial in small juveniles (less than 3 cm SL); fin rays present but buried in skin in larger juveniles (Ref. 36121 ).
