Character: Females with body short, globular; mouth large, cleft extending past eye, oblique or vertical; eye small; illicium short; esca simple, with conical distal end but no crest; anterior margin of vomer very concave; skin covered with tiny close-set dermal spinules, appearing naked; upper and lower jaws with numerous slender, recurved and depressible teeth; vomerine teeth present; dark brown to black over entire surface of head, body, fins, and oral cavity; sphenotic spines absent. D10-13; P 14-16; A 4; C 9. Upper jaw teeth 37-56, lower jaw teeth 46-122. Measurement in % SL: illicium length 34.5, escal width 3.9%, head length 27.6, head depth 45.7, premaxillary length 34.5, lower jaws 34.5, the narrowest distance between front 13.8%. 
Habitat: Marine. First dorsal spine of female highly modified into a long rod with a light organ in the tip call illicium and esca, the esca containing bacteria as luminous symbiont, its function in attracting prey. Oviparous, larvae habits in the upper, food-rich 
Distribution: Wistly distributed in the tropical to temperate of all oceans. It is a common species in Taiwan occurring in northeast off Yilan.

Distinguishing characteristics of metamorphosed female: deeply concave anterior margin of vomer, least outside width between frontals 9.1-17.8% SL; upper jaw with 34-178 teeth, lower jaw 46-142 teeth; length of longest tooth in lower jaw 7.7-16.7% SL; width of pectoral fin lobe 6.1-8.9% SL; width of escal bulb 1.9-5.1% SL; length of illicium 23.1-37.2% SL; esca with minute crests or absent; skin with minute spinules restricted to caudal peduncle; relatively thin integument 0.48 mm (Ref. 86949 ). Distinguishing characteristics of metamorphosed male: upper denticular with 9-12 ventrally directed anterior teeth and posteromedial series of 3-5 teeth; lower denticular 10-13 teeth; posterior nostril contiguous with eye; 12-14 olfactory lamellae; skin naked or with few scattered dermal spinules (Ref. 86949 ).
