Overview
Main identification features
  • snout pointed, profile straight
  • d: spines with bunches of cirri
  • pink + brown and red blotches
Dorsal rays X, 12, the first soft ray prolonged; anal rays III, 6; lower 6 pectoral rays unbranched; lateral-line scales 41- 45; snout pointed, upper profile straight; body depth 2.8-3.0 in standard length; bony space between eyes of adults 2.0 in eye; mouth reaching level of front edge of eye; fifth dorsal spine longest, 1.8-2.0 in head; a tuft of cirri near tip of each dorsal spine; propercle strongly serrated.

Whitish or pink with squarish red to brown blotches covering sides; head with smaller red to brown spots and blotches.

Size: grows to 10 cm.

Habitat: rocky and coral reefs.

Depth: 2-40 m, usually seen perched on coral heads in 3-15 m.

Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific; the central Gulf of California to Ecuador and all the offshore islands.

Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993)
Character: Body elongate; body depth 2.8-3.0 in standard length; snout pointed. A fringe of cirri on the hind edge of the anterior nostril. Interorbital space scaleless. Palatine present. A single dorsal fins with X spines and 12 rays, a tuft of cirri near tip of each dorsal spine; anal fin with III spines and 6 rays; lower 6 pectoral rays unbrached, the longest ray reaching a vertical through base of second anal spine; caudal fin emarginate. Lateral line complete, with 41-45 scales; 3 rows of scales above lateral line; 4 rows of large scales on cheek. Body whitish with three rows of large subquadrate red-edged dark brown spots arranged in five vertical series; lesser red spots between and below these series; four vertical rows of small dark spots on head.  
Habitat: Inhabits areas of rich coral growth and clear water of lagoon, channel, or seaward reefs from below the surge zone to depths of at least 40 m. Rests on, in, or beneath hard or soft corals. Feeds on crustaceans and small fishes. Males are territorial and h

Highly variable in color from pale with grey to black blotches to pink with bright red blotches (Ref. 48636 ). Pale with horizontal rows of subquadrate dark brown spots; a row of smaller spots on LL between larger spots; small dark brown spots on head (Ref. 5469 ).
