California Fungi—Chlorociboria aeruginascens Chlorociboria aeruginosa
(Photo: © Michael Wood)

Chlorociboria aeruginascens (Nyl.) Kanouse ex C.S. Ramamurthi, Korf & L.R. Batra
Mycologia 49(6): 858. 1957.

Photo: These are very small!

Common Name: none

Synonym: Chlorosplenium aeruginascens (Nyl.) P. Karst.

  • Sporocarp

Fruiting bodies aerugineus-green (blue-green); apotheca cup to discoid shaped, 3-10mm broad at maturity; stipitate to sub-stipitate with the stipe typically laterally attached.

  • Spores

Spores fusiform, 5-9 x 1.5-2 µm, smooth. Spore print not seen.

  • Habitat

Scattered to gregarious on wood; the wood usually stained blue-green by the mycelium of the fungus.

  • Edibility

Much too small to be considered!

  • Comments

Chlorociboria aeruginascens can easily be confused with its close relative, Chlorociboria aeruginosa . Chlorociboria aeruginosa tends to be a little smaller and have a centrally attached stipe rather than a laterally attached stipe. The only consistantly reliable differentiation is the larger spores of Chlorociboria aeruginosa : 9-15 X 1.4-2.8 µm versus 5-8 X 0.7-2.8 µm for Chlorociboria aeruginascens .
