FAMILY PLEURONECTIDAE

RIGHT-EYE FLOUNDERS, TURBOTS

Besides the position of the eyes on the right side, key characteristics of this family include: a small, asymmetric mouth, teeth concentrated on blind-side of mouth, border of the preoperculum free, very evident; symetric pelvic fins; lateral lines on both sides of the body, without an arch over the pectoral, with a branch under the lower eye and long branch extending along under the dorsal fin.

There are some 34 genera and 90 species worldwide, in tropical and temperate areas; three eastern Pacific temperate members of one Pacific genus and the sole temperate member of an endemic eastern Pacific genus extend into the northern edges of the tropical eastern Pacific.
