Overview
Unlike most sphinx moths that lay eggs singly, Ceratomia catalpae moths lay batches, which may contain over 100. Through the third instar, their larvae feed gregariously, as shown above, and often defoliate their host tree. Late instar larvae feed individually. They are often parasitized by a by a braconid wasp, Cotesia congregata, which in turn is gregarious.
