Main identification features
  • no fatty eyelid
  • both lips thick
  • teeth not on lips, fixed on jaws
  • scales rough
AGONOSTOMUS

MULLETS

Body robust; no fatty eyelid; nostrils close together; bone under front of eye with serrated front and lower edges; distance between front and rear nostrils greater than length of rear nostril; teeth strong, imbedded in jawbones, in bands inside lips, those on inner row on top jaw with 2-3 points, those on lower jaw with 1-2 points; teeth on sides (and front) of roof of mouth; top and bottom lips thick; without fleshy knob at tip of lower lips; anal with II spines, 8-10rays; scales very rough.

About 2 species in a neotropical genus; 1 found in our region and the tropical western Atlantic.
